Electronic and analog media experimentation

For this project I have been interested in working with a combination of new and obsolete technology. I have become with the facsinated analog process and unusual movement of old and new wind-up toys which I have collected from a friend and at the landfill recover store. I found these toys embodied many references to the research I have been doing into obsolescence, particularly the idea of planned obsolescence and how this can create unnessary waste. I also found a great old projection screen at the recover store which I would like to use as part of my installation.

In my first tests I worked with the toys and a HD Camera hooked up to a data projector. I used a lamp to try and light the toys from different angle, and found that lighting them from as low as possible created the best effect. I then decided to add an over-head projector into my experimentation, this was great as by placing the wind-up toys on top the camera could really pick up the colours and unique movement of each toy, as well as projecting their moving siloettes.

Using the OHP definately added another angle to my original installation idea, I was able to start testing the layout of objects and placement of projections. I played with over-lapping the Data projection and ohp projection, resulting in the colour and shapes of the data projection appearing in the shadow of the toys silouettes created by the OHP. This was interesting, however I found that much of the interesting colour and light captured by the HD camera was lost in the process, so decided each should be projected onto a separate screen or wall.
